Following the uncertainty of the ruling All Progressives congress winning the inconclusive governorship election, slated to hold on Saturday, 23rd March, 2019, in Nassarawa local government area of Kano state, governor Abdulahi Umar Ganduje amidst criticism, is going on with more wasteful projects.
Gama has a dense population, and also a determinant factor as to who coasts to glory between Mr Abba Kabir Yusuf of the PDP and Mr Ganduje of the APC.
Mr Ganduje is flooding the community with government projects, such as drilling of numerous boreholes, Asphalt overlay on Gama's main artery, free eye treatment, which includes offering surgeries and medication. An old abandoned Isa Kaita hospital is presently undergoing massive renovation.
All these is a way to directly induce prospective eligible voters, in order to gather their votes.
Premium Times had previously reported a case in Kano state, where governor Umar Ganduje is inducing voters in Nassarawa local government area with enticing offer, such as direct cash payment, between N10,000 and above, claiming that the money is for start ups to use in boosting their businesses.
Other enticing items includes football kits, which will be distributed among selected clubs in the community on Thursday, two days before election run off.
Though criticisms is flying from all corners, because of the time of this sudden massive projects, Mr Ibrahim of the PDP has expressed hope that the inducement will not shift the attention of his support base.
Below is the word from critics:
“It is clearly a case of voter inducement”, said Jibrin Ibrahim, a professor of political science and senior fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development.
“He wasn’t doing these projects before this time, and it is interesting to see that nothing is going to Dakata, which is the next ward to Gama. So, it is clearly directed at the voters,” he said.
“It is very clear that these projects that Governor Ganduje is hurriedly executing are not budgeted for. They are not in the approved budget.” Said Auwal Rafsanjani, the executive director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC).
“Government is not a personal project to use it for personal gain. I think, if you have a serious state assembly they should have asked how this sudden withdrawal is being done without even proper procurement. It is not just about carrying out these projects. There is no accountability in the manner in which these projects are executed,” he said.
“The question is, what was he doing all this while that he abandoned these areas without carrying out infrastructural projects in those places?”
In a bid to defend their flaws, Mr Mohammed Garba, the Kano states commissioner for information, said the following:
“Personally I don’t think there is anything wrong with this. Whatever a politician would do to get the support of the people, provided it is going to benefit the people, I don’t see anything wrong with that,” he said.
“If that project is for the benefit of the people of Gama, and part of strategy, the government decides to execute it at this material time, personally I didn’t see anything wrong”.
