A two-minute delay saved the life of Antonis Mavropoulos, who was to board the ET 302 Nairobi flight that crashed, leaving 157 people dead, among them 32 Kenyans.
Mavropoulos, who is the president of The International Solid Waste Association, took to his Facebook page to narrate how lucky he was.
“When I arrived, the boarding was closed and I watched the last passengers in tunnel go in, I screamed for them to put me in but they refused,” Mavropoulos stated.
He narrated how airport attendants asked him to wait for the next flight and took him to a waiting area.
While he was surfing the internet, he learnt the plane he was to board had crashed.
“I realised that I had to immediately contact my own people and tell them I was not in the plane,” he noted.
Mavropoulos divulged that airport officials boarded him the next flight that was going to Nairobi, where he was supposed to attend the annual assembly of the UN Environment Programme.
In a statement, the Ethiopian airlines confirmed the plane B-737-800 MAX crashed six minutes after it took off from Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa after losing control.
The plane was also carrying 18 Canadians, 6 Egyptians, 9 Ethiopians, 7 French nationals, 8 Americans, 8 Italians, 8 Chinese and 7 Britons among others.
