The fight for senate leadership in the 9th National Assembly, intensified following the swearing in of President Mohammed Buhari, on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, for a second term in office.
The Presidency openly indicated interest to lobby for the PDP senators support, in a bid to ensure that there anointed candidate Ahmad Lawan clinches the Senate leadership seat.
Recall that the APC leadership formerly lambasted the main opposition party PDP over their statement that they are also determinant factor over who becomes the National Assembly leader.
Statements from the APC National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Lanre Isa Onilu, insinuated that the senators elected under the platform of the opposition party has no say on who becomes the next Senate President.
Mr Onilu also stated that it is abnormal for the opposition senators to take part in the election that would produce the Senate President, and others.
His statement read thus:“The PDP leaders and their senators-elect are ignorant. If they are not ignorant, they will know that they don’t have a say on who becomes the President of the Senate.
“The positions that belong to the party with the majority, belong to the party with the majority. The positions that belong to the party with the minority also belong to the party with the minority.
“That is what is being practised in the proper presidential system of government that we adopted in this country.
“So, it is not for the PDP senators to come and vote for who becomes the Senate President. If that has been happening before, it is an aberration. “This position belongs to the APC.
We have won majority and once you win the majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives, you determine those who are going to occupy those positions that belong to the party with majority. “That is what is obtainable in the United States.
You don’t even see them come to the floor to come and vote for the Senate President. Once they determine who will occupy those positions that belong to the party with majority, they will just come to the floor and announce.”
In another post, the APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yekini Nabena, stated that the APC decision on the selection and zoning of principal officers for incoming 9th Assembly is supreme.
According to Mr. Nabena, “The APC has learnt its lesson from the outgoing National Assembly when impostors masquerading as party men sabotaged our party and hijacked our mandate; affliction shall not rise up the second time. “The efforts by the Adams Oshiomhole leadership of the party are commendable in achieving a fair selection and zoning arrangement that appeals to a greater section of the party stakeholders.
“APC has an overwhelming majority in the National Assembly and has a legitimate right to make its choices on the selection and zoning of principal offices.
“The APC family is in agreement on the party’s supremacy and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition parties should focus on their minority positions,” he said
He continued by saying that “Their plans are bound to fail as the APC is a strong party with the unity of purpose,”
However in a new twist yesterday, the Presidency through the Senior Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Solomon Ita Enag, at the open declaration of Senator Peter Nwaobashi (PDP Delta state), for Senator Lawan said that, "I thank you for the support."
Senator Enang reads: "it was equally learnt that a former president of the Senate had before yesterday, asked some PDP lawmakers still loyal to him, to support Lawan's aspiration.
